Lack of sleep may lead to reduced positive feelings, research suggests

NORWICH: A study has found that lack of sleep can cause people to feel less positive.

Researchers at the University of East Anglia looked at 154 studies spanning more than 50 years. These sleep deprivation studies were conducted on more than 5,000 people between the ages of seven and 79.

Research has shown that sleep deprivation (a condition in which people get less sleep than usual) is associated with a marked decrease in positive feelings in people.

Also, sleep deprivation was associated with higher risks of anxiety and depression, although the effect was apparently modest.

According to the lead author of the study, Dr. Joe Bower, from the University, when people don’t enjoy enjoyable activities like seeing friends or watching a favorite TV show, their risk of developing depression increases.

He said that such people cannot mix with people, so the risk of them being alone increases.

“In our sleep-deprived society, people often stay up late at night, but this analysis suggests that less sleep can affect their mood,” Dr. Joe Bower said.

The research was published in the journal Psychological Built-in.
