Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed was unanimously elected as the Vice President of the Committee of Human Rights for Parliamentarians (CHRP) of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), representing Asia in the CHRP. Milli Odhiambo of Kenya was elected President at the meeting held in Geneva.
Senator Mushahid Hussain is the first parliamentarian from Pakistan to be elected to the top-level post of a key body of the IPU, an international organization representing the world’s parliaments. Two years ago at the IPU General Assembly in Rwanda, Senator Mushahid Hussain was elected as a member of the CHRP, the only Asian on the important 10-member committee.
Senator Mushahid Hussain, who is a member of the Senate Human Rights Committee, also served as the head of the Pakistani delegation to the United Nations Human Rights Commission in Geneva. In 2000, Mushahid Hussain was awarded the title of ‘Prisoner of Conscience’ by the London-based Amnesty International, the only Pakistani political prisoner to receive this honor, for his illegal detention without charge for 440 days. are
Similarly, Senator Mushahid Hussain is also the convener of Pakistan Parliamentary Forum on PKR (Palestine, Kashmir and Rohingya) and he is also serving in the Executive Board of Al-Quds Parliament based in Istanbul while supporting the Palestinian cause.
